Oklahoma City Thunder Kick Off Title Defense with Dramatic Overtime Win

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander delivered the decisive baskets deep into double overtime as the defending champions started their championship campaign with a narrow win over the visiting Rockets.

Last season's MVP poured in 35 points, featuring two clutch free throws with just mere seconds remaining in double OT, giving the titleholders a positive start.

The Rockets' big man top-scored with 39 points and also hit a career-high five shots from beyond the arc.

But Chet Holmgren, who added 28 points, played a major role alongside match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.

"Grit and defense," Gilgeous-Alexander commented of their showing. "We know that when we do it defensively we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—shots, misses, good luck or misfortune. We did enough defence to secure the victory. We're pretty rusty, but it's a good start."

Prior to the game, Oklahoma's title banner was unveiled at their home court, while the squad were presented with their title rings.

Oklahoma City beat the Indiana Pacers in last season's best-of-seven NBA Finals. It was their first title since the team moved in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 title.

Indiana will have the opportunity to get some payback on Friday when they host the Thunder, while the Rockets are back on court on the identical day at the Pistons.

In other action, a huge performance of 43 points, 12 boards and nine dimes from the Slovenian star was insufficient to stop his current team the Los Angeles Lakers from suffering a 119-109 loss against the Golden State Warriors.

Jimmy Butler picked up 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter chipped in 23 points for the road team.

Los Angeles were missing the league's top scorer LeBron James as he is recovering from sciatica.
