Alphabet Plans Investment of $15bn for Constructing AI Computing Facility in India
Alphabet, Google's holding company Alphabet Inc. will invest fifteen billion dollars to build an artificial intelligence data center in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
The infrastructure, to be established in the port city of Visakhapatnam, is set to become a segment of the worldwide network of Google of AI centres spread across twelve different countries.
"This represents the biggest artificial intelligence center that we are going to be investing in across the globe, excluding the United States of America," Thomas Kurien announced at an conference in the capital city of Delhi on Tuesday, mentioning that the investment is to be distributed across the coming five years.
The revelation arrives during a period President Trump of the United States has been asking American companies to prioritise local funding.
India's Growing Role in Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure
The country has emerged as a major hub for artificial intelligence facilities. India's inexpensive data services and rapidly growing internet user base have established it as a hub for AI and cloud growth for tech giants.
"This center will introduce our pioneering tech solutions to businesses and consumers in the country, accelerating AI development and driving growth nationwide," said Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai.
Specifics of the Project
A definitive arrangement to finalise the initiative is scheduled for signing soon, local government officials said.
"It constitutes a major step forward for our state's technological advancement, innovation, and international reputation," stated the technology official Nara Lokesh.
The project will merge AI and cloud systems with sustainable power solutions and an expanded fibre-optic network.
The State's Data Hub Strategy
The project is part of the Andhra Pradesh government's strategy to develop 6 gigawatts of computing facility capacity by 2029.
Data centres are tangible infrastructures that contain the networking and computing devices that organizations use to accumulate, handle, retain, and circulate data.
They contain hosting servers, data storage systems and networking hardware like network routers and security firewalls, in addition to the necessary power and cooling systems to operate them.
Financial Attractions
Across Andhra Pradesh, the government has been offering subsidised land and energy to draw international investors.
Industry Growth
The country's computing facility market has grown rapidly over the past five years, surpassing the one gigawatt capacity threshold in 2024 and nearly tripling its capability from 2019.
